This absorbing film, which justly earned the 15 year-old Taraneh Alidoosti the Best Actress Award in this year's Fajr Film Festival in Tehran, is the 7th feature film of Rasul Sadr-Ameli (his very popular Girl in the Sneakers from 1999 was one of Iran's most successful films). Taraneh, a young orphan, lives with her grandmother. She is seduced by, and marries, a young man with whom she plans to live after her studies (the marriage is temporary, a sigheh). The relationship quickly turns sour, as her immature brat of a husband shows no sense of responsibility. She decides to divorce, but soon after the separation finds that she is pregnant. She asks the help of her mother-in-law, a social worker, but is cold-shouldered and denied support. How a courageous single mother in Iran has to deal not only with family trauma, but also with social taboos is what made this film such a hit in Iran. Despite the storyline, this film is definitely more than a simple melodrama and was also awarded Best Director and Best Screenplay at Fajr.
